About
Which green looks great with lavendar? My hands are moving around fabrics to find out. It is a great problem, a great question to explore since part of what I want to accomplish with my life is to make a visual moment that pulls viewers out of our fraught norm and into beauty, whimsy, and possibility.
My sculpture compositions are inspired by the concept of floral arrangements. Flower arrangements and plants are a subject of paintings in art history and a widely accepted norm of beauty for interiors and momentus occasions. In my sculpture compositions you can see rhythm, color, shape and line. The lines and shapes extend out of recycled vases, keeping the sculptures intentionally grounded in “real life” scale and origin. I choose to use fabric for how well it brings color to life. We have a physical understanding of fabric because it shares space with us. It's like fabric breaks the fourth wall. We look at the orange fabric and orange is in the room with us sharing that moment.
I always return to working three dimensionally because I enjoy sharing the space with a piece. However, because I am also inspired by fashion photography, I use my sculptures as models for their own shoots. I look at the sculptures through the camera lens in search of an image that shows me narrative and emotion and plays with scale.
Matisse with scissors, Faith Ringgold, Niki de Saint Phalle, Ouizi, Jim Henson, the Mummenschanz, and Alexander McQueen are some of the magic makers that influenced my style.
I graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Rhode Island School of Design, and have always been quietly working with fabric and color.
I invite you to email me at apunchakstudio@gmail.com if you would like to add smiles and color to a work lobby or home space with a scupture or with any questions you may have. I aim to share prints of images I have made with the sculptures in 2025.
